MISSION STATEMENT
For over 60 years, the Red Auerbach International Basketball School has worked with young men to make them better basketball players and better citizens. Our program is intense and it is challenging. However, we cater to each camper based upon us not being a select camp. Red Auerbach, our founder, wanted a program that worked with youngsters who love the game and wanted to get better.
We are proud of our staff, many of whom have been part of the Auerbach School for many years. We teach, we drill, we compete, we challenge, and we have a ton of fun. We are more than just being about a basketball school as our lectures may not always be about the game of basketball. We are concerned about your education, your academics, and the value of family. These principles are what makes the Auerbach School the premier basketball school in the country. Steve Curly, Camp Director

It is hard to estimate the value of international interactions. Campers from the U.S, Wales, Nova Scotia , Iceland and Italy playing and competing together is the common thread .

Auerbach School started in 1960 when Jerry Volk, the owner of a summer camp for boys and girls, met with Red Auerbach to look for more ways of utilizing his camp facilities. He and Red developed an immediate bond and together, they created the Red Auerbach Basketball School and Celtics Rookie Camp. All coaches, campers and Celtics players slept in cabins, ate in the mess hall and played on hard top outdoor courts. That was it for 20 years. It was time to move on.
Red and Steve Curley, a long-time staff member, discussed opportunities to upgrade the location as it was getting harder to keep everyone safe and happy with the location and facilities. In 1982, Steve took over as the School Director and moved the program to Brandeis University in Waltham, MA. Cabins were now dormitories, the mess hall now was a dining hall and the hard courts became six indoor courts. It was a step up for sure!
We have moved around a bit and with each move, an attempt to improve. We went from Brandeis to Bryant in RI, to UNH in New Hampshire, back to MA at Nichols College. In 2023 our program took us to Biddeford, ME to the University of New England, which has proven to be too small as we return to our pre-covid registration numbers and now home again to Nichols College in central Massachusetts.
What we have lost is the glamour of the Celtics Rookie Camp which even the Celtics no longer have. We no longer attract campers who come for the attraction of the Celtics, but for the love of basketball. Our program is our attraction. We are not a select school. It is for young men that want to learn, compete and have fun. We are proud of the fact that our endorsements comes from literally thousands of men who now share the title of “The Auerbach School Alumni."
Camp Director, Steve Curley, has been a part of the Auerbach School since 1960. He became partner and director with Red in 1982. Steve spent 20 years as a teacher/coach in the public and private sector and then transitioned for 20 years as an executive in the sporting goods industry. The Auerbach School, under Steve’s direction, has moved from cabins to dormitories; from hard courts to college gyms; from Mess hall to dining room, and from mostly locals to international attendance and recognition. What has not changed is Steve’s philosophy.
He and his veteran staff’s commitment is to be sure everyone learns, everyone competes, and everyone has fun. The goal is for everyone, all talent levels, to have a positive experience and desire to grow as an athlete, student and person. The camper then becomes part of the Auerbach alumni, a tradition that has been building for over 60 years.
K.C. comes to the Red Auerbach School from a great bloodline and history. He is the son of former Boston Celtics legend, head coach and Hall of Fame inductee K.C. Jones. Our K.C. traces his involvement in the Auerbach school to Camp Milbrook where it all started 60+ years ago. K.C. started with us as a camper then later was able to participate in the Celtics rookie camp at the end of his Junior year while at Bentley College. K.C. was a member of the Bentley Falcons men’s basketball team and team captain his senior year. He has been a hotel executive for over twenty years where he is currently a hotel Managing Director.
Vitor Imbuziero is dynamic, knowledgeable and a terrific leader. He has worked camps in Japan, Brazil, Italy and his own in Michigan. He has also worked lots of well-known camps here in the US but says, “I look forward most to the Auerbach School, the greatest camp I know.”
Experiences to name few:
Coach Myers is the head basketball coach at Sherwood High School in Maryland. 2022-2023 was his first year there and ended the season 21-5. He has 35 years of coaching experience at most every level: from camps to high schools to college. Coach Darnell worked with John Thompson on the college level, and a number of high schools. At Springbrook High School in Silver Spring Maryland his team won 3 straight championships and he has even been recognized as Maryland’s coach of the year. Coach D is a stickler for detail and demands the best from his players many of whom have gone on to college and the pros. Ask him for names!! He is a super popular coach who gives the extra effort as seen by his now famous “Coach D’Souza 6:30am extra sessions”. He is a true Auerbach School legend.
Coach Floyd Butler has been part of the Auerbach School for over 30 years. He has gone from a rookie official to one of our best and most respected coaches. A parent was quoted as saying: “my son said that Coach Butler was the hardest coach I have ever had and he is the best coach I have ever had!”. That’s Floyd. He is part of a coaching staff at Imhotep, a 6-time state championship program, #3 in the country in 2022 and in the top ten for many years. He has been a head coach on the high school level but feels that success as an assistant means more than names and titles. Coach Butler brags about the Auerbach School and we brag about him.
Coach Taylor is a transplant from New York City to Hyannis, MA. A graduate of St. Lawrence College, he is now an administrator at Barnstable High School in Hyannis and the Head Basketball Coach. He is a super star at Auerbach School, walking quietly yet giving A+ input into every phase of our program. It is always said, “check it out with Alik and see what he thinks!”. He is a licensed board official and our go-to guy when there are basketball questions that need correct answers. He is a great mentor and teacher at the camp and always engages with all of the players and coaches.
Our country may have won the Revolutionary war against England many year ago, but England has given us one winner - and that is Coach Rob Godber. Coach Godber has been with us long enough for us to realize that there are lots of winners in England as he always brings us some great kids from Wales and England. He is a graduate of Cardiff Metropolitan University and graduated with a degree in Sports Coaching and Development. As a player, his team won the Division 3 National Championship. He came to us through a reference from a past coach and proved to us that it was one of the best calls we have ever made. He is diligent, demanding of excellence, knowledgeable and detailed-oriented while being humble and unassuming. Coach Rob has proven to be a great asset to the Red Auerbach School over the past eight plus years and even speaks American!!!
